Graffiti Mess

This article was in the Sun Newspaper, Saturday 27th May. When will councils learn that this is not the solution.

Is this sedition?

With the recent sedition laws introduced by the government in full force. I wonder if providing the means to burn an Australian flag is illegal. I found this 'Australian Flag Burning" kit in a Melbourne book shop. It contains all the things you need to 'light up' an ozzie flag, matches, firelighter and of course a very small Australian flag.

Check out the website of Azlan McLennan for a look at how the above mentioned sedition laws are effecting social comment.

A little to loud?

Wonder what track was playing to cause the speaker to do this? It was on top of a garbage bin out the front of the office.

The laneway grows

The collection of stencils and placed art keeps growing in this little laneway around the corner from my office. Winder how long it will be before it gets 'cleaned up'. The bottom left image is a canvas attached to the wall.

Illustration site

Came across this site for an Australian based illustrator, well worth a look. www.travisprice.com.au

Interesting languages

Found this interesting blog in what I think is aribic. I have no idea what it's about, but it looks interesting.

Station tagged

I was greeted by this 'tagging' at my local train station this morning, it's a shame this kind of thing is still happening. Especially given the councils current 'zero tolerance' policy on graffiti. There is no artistic merit in these kind of tags and they don't help when advocates are trying to lift the profile of street art, in particular stenciling.

When are the people responsible going to 'wake up' and realize they are undoing much of the good work that has been done trying to get street based art legitimized.

Faces

These ones are quiet large and look to be created with a mix of free style spraying and stencils.

Swisher

Came across this interesting looking can last night. Think it's an air freshener, seems a little 'low-tech' given our technological climate....

Red Face

Large paste up from Caledonian Lane. Quiet powerful when you see it in the street.

Happy Face

From the same laneway, it's a nice combination of found images and stencils.

Amigo

Came across these paste ups by 'Amigo' today, they are a little different than the normal stencils as I think they are digital outputs. They look like they have been run through a printer twice to create some interesting overprinting textures.

Red girl

Another example of artworks being glued to the walls of the city. I wonder where these fit in the 'zero tolerance' policy of the Melbourne City Council. I was at the meeting when they passed the 'clean up' legislation late last year and can't recall the policy referring to 'stencils' or 'artworks' glued to objects.

Faces on the wall

Came across this series of large face stencils in Canedonian Lane. I like the interesting use of colours and the reversal of the third one.

L0vely peice of type on the second foor stair-well of the Myer department store in Melbourne.

Green girl

Screen printed paste up in a Melbourne laneway.

Record on the wall

Continuing the trend of gluing things to the wall, this record was in same laneway as the shot guy stencil. By the looks of it one one has tried to take it down, only to succeed in breaking the corners off.

Stuck to the wall

I have seen a few of these 'stuck on' stencils starting to appear around the city. They are usually glued to the walls with 'liquid cement' which makes removal almost impossible.

Found Stencils

Came across these stencils on my journey to work yesturday morning. The first three are from North Melbourne and the last one is in the CBD.

Apple + Nike

It's a shame that apple have associated their product with such an unethical company. Why did they have to team up with Nike, a company that blatantly uses sweat shops to manufacture it's products. It will be interesting to see if Apple gets any complaints about the relationship.

That said I think the idea is pretty cool, more info available from Apple at http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/

Low tech posters

With the recent changes to the student union legislation some great 'low tech' posters have been creeping up around the city. These two were on Elizabeth street in Melbourne.

Contradictions

Have a close look at these signs. One is for JFTA's 'environmental services' and the other is for their 'petrochemical services'. They are on the front of a business in outer Melbourne, I can't help wonder how a petrochemical company can offer environmental services.

Fire Drill

The worst time for a fire drill is when international designers are conducting workshops in your studio. This one happened just before lunch during the AGIdeas masters workshops of John Ellery and Reza Abedini.
